COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM ACT OF 2006 (June 5, 2006 update)

On March 27, 2006, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006. The bill has been substantially modified as a result of the passage of three amendments and the inclusion of a number of compromises negotiated by Senators Hegel (R-NE) and Martinez (R-FL) The bill was passed by the US Senate on May 26, 2006. This is a summary of the provisions of this 796 page bill.

Partiendo de las coyunturas legales y políticas que se dieron en 1996 y en 2005, y utilizando la lente de la literatura sobre migración transnacional y la literatura sobre ciudadanía, el presente trabajo examina el marco legislativo que ha venido surgiendo tanto a nivel local, estatal y federal en Estados Unidos, explorando con más detalle algunas de estas leyes/iniciativas/reglamentaciones que sin duda van configurando un lenguaje de exclusión y un espacio de racialización con los cuales tienen que lidiar los migrantes mexicanos que viven en éste país.
